Trip-time-based Congestion Detection

چکیده
To regulate network traffic and ensure that every user can get a reasonable quality of service whatever the load, networking protocols need to implement some sort of congestion control. To be able to control congestion, one must first know when it occurs and to which extent. This is the scope of congestion detection. Till now, congestion detection has only been based on packet losses. Protocols like TCP assume that a packet loss is a consequence and a signal of the network’s overload. Anyway, this detection scheme has a number of flaws1. In this report, we discuss the possibility of detecting congestion from the packets’ trip times. We first analyse the characteristics and distribution of One-way Trip Time or OTT. We then design a scheme of detection based on OTT measurements, and validate this scheme by simulation over a large range of situations. 1 Distribution of the One-way Trip Time

Adaptive explicit congestion notification
Using ns-2 simulations, this paper evaluates an Adaptive Explicit Congestion Notification (AECN) router. By receiving round-trip time (RTT) source hints from each TCP flow, AECN divides flows into flow groups based on RTT ranges. AECN uses distinct flow group drop probabilities and a mark front scheme to provide higher goodput and better fairness than Random Early Detection (RED) and Explicit C...
متن کاملTCP-Ho: A Congestion Control Algorithm with Design and Performance Evaluation
A critical design issue of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is its congestion control that allows the protocol to adjust the endto-end communication rate based on the detection of packet loss. However, TCP congestion control may function poorly during its slow start and congestion avoidance phases. This is because TCP sends bursts of packets with the fast window increase and the ACK-clock ba...
متن کاملArchitectural Issues for Multicast Congestion Control
As multicast applications are becoming more common, multicast congestion control has become an important problem. In this paper, we present an architecture for multicast congestion control schemes. We identify three components that constitute this architecture: namely, the feedback consolidation mechanism, the round-trip time measurement mechanism, and the loss detection and timeout mechanism. ...
متن کاملDesign of H Congestion Controller for TCP Networks Based on LMI Formulation
In this paper, a state feedback H¥ controller is proposed in order to design an active queue management (AQM) system based on congestion control algorithm for networks supporting TCP protocols. In this approach, the available link bandwidth is modeled as a time-variant disturbance. The purpose of this paper is to design a controller which is capable of achieving the queue size and can guarantee...
متن کاملCongestion Control Schemes for TCP/IP Networks
This paper describes six methods for controlling congestion for TCP connections. The first four, Slow Start algorithm [5], Tri-S [8], DUAL [7], and TCP Vegas [1] treat the network as a black box, in that the only way to detect congestion is through packet loss and changes in round trip time, or throughput. The last two, Random Early Detection [4] and Explicit Congestion Notification [3] depend ...
